Noongar Artwork – Graphic Design or an Acrylic Painting – Expression of Interest

Calling Noongar Artists

South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is inviting Expressions of Interest from Noongar artists living within our service footprint, including Bunbury, Busselton, Mandurah, Narrogin, Katanning, Collie and Manjimup, to create original artwork for our upcoming uniform rebrand and brand identity project.

As SWAMS prepares to move into our new Health Hub and celebrate 30 years of serving Aboriginal communities across Noongar Country, we are seeking artwork that reflects the diversity, culture, landscapes, waterways and communities we serve.

We welcome submissions from artists working in:

  • Graphic Design (digital artwork)
  • Acrylic Painting

Successful artworks will be incorporated into five new SWAMS uniform designs and may also be used across selected marketing materials, program branding, promotional merchandise and community communications.

Design Categories

Artists may submit an Expression of Interest for one of the following categories:

  1. Maternal Child Health
    • Djilba purple, pinks, light blues and white.
    • Symbolic of family health and healthy lifestyles in maternal colours. Language words would be encouraged as a line of words gently weaving through your design- Father: Maaman, Mother: Ngaank, Children: Koorlangka, Baby: Maawit, Family: Moort. Flowers, waterways, animals, bush foods.
  2. Earth and Inland
    • Rustic Brown, Ochre, native flower and seasonal colours.
    • Kangaroos, emus, possum, native plants and flowers, animals and colours of Country.
  3. Banksia and Balga
    • Greens – many natural tones, Golds, Orange tones, Red highlights.
    • Banksia, Firewood, Balga, Kangaroo paw. Trees, native shrubs and bush foods. Storylines and/ or patterns that signify your Country.
  4. Black Cockatoo and Traditional Tools
    • Red, black, orange, yellow ochres.
    • Feature – the Karrak – Black Cockatoo. The Boomerang and Spears to symbolise traditional and highly valued hunting methods.
  5. Water and Waterways
    • A range of blues, deep ocean blue and aquas, white, green to gold tones, for all waters, ocean, rivers, estuary.
    • Waterways and rivers connecting communities. Circular meeting places to represent community yarning, family connection or that symbols of growth and interconnectedness.

* One Artist will be selected per Design Category. You may enter for more than one design but will only be awarded one category.

Artist Commission

SWAMS will commission five artists, with each successful artist receiving:

$5,000 (ex GST)

How to Apply

To submit your Expression of Interest, please read our full Expression of Interest briefing paper below. You can then print and submit the form or complete our online application form below and upload:

  • A design concept or sketch (not the final artwork)
  • Up to three examples of previous artwork
  • An optional artist statement or story supporting your concept
