Support for children and families matters

A new report highlighting problems with WA’s child protection system shows the importance of Kwaba Bidi’s work within the South West community.

The SNAICC* Family Matters Report, released in December, shows Aboriginal children in Western Australia are 17.8 times more likely to end up in the care system than non-Aboriginal children.

WA has the highest overrepresentation of Aboriginal children in care in Australia, and the rate has continued to rise over the past 10 years.

SWAMS program Kwaba Bidi is working to improve the situation by providing culturally appropriate care to Aboriginal children in the South West and introducing family support services last year.

Manager Matt Harbisher said the results showed why Kwaba Bidi’s services are needed in the community.

“While the statistics are not good news, they highlight the need to provide culturally-focused care to our koorlangkas and get them back with their moort when possible,” he said.

Kwaba Bidi’s family services range from practical assistance to Department of Communities‑referred support, complementing its Out of Home Care and Home Stretch offerings.

This work plays a crucial role in preventing removals and increasing reunifications.

“By supporting moort to improve their situation, we can help to break the cycle and improve outcomes for our people,” said Matt.
