September 9, 2025
On 9th September we shone a light on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) as part of FASD Awareness Month and the Red Shoes Rock campaign.
Our deadly Maternal Child Health team wore some strikingly bold red socks with pride, helping kick off conversations about the condition, which is often described as an invisible disability.
FASD is a lifelong disability caused by exposure to alcohol before birth. When alcohol is consumed during pregnancy it crosses the placenta, interrupting the normal development of the baby’s brain and other organs.
People with FASD can have a range of challenges with physical activities, communication, memory, learning and behaviour. It is a spectrum because there is a wide variation in the type and severity of impairments people experience.
The Red Shoes Rock campaign creates a space to talk about prevention, raise awareness, and show our support for individuals and families living with FASD.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone working tirelessly to help our bubs be Born Strong – through education, advocacy, and support for families impacted by FASD.
