New doctors welcomed

January 27, 2026

Welcome to new SWAMS Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Rosemary Olufemi-Akanle, who is on a 10 week placement with SWAMS until 30 March.

Dr Rosemary has spent the past 18 months at Bunbury Regional Hospital providing care in the Emergency Department as well as with the oldest and youngest locals in Paediatrics and Geriatrics.

RMOs are medical student graduates that have taken the next step in their career before taking on a chosen medical specialty.

We are excited to have her expertise and support as part of the team.

Dr Rosemary isn’t the only doctor to join SWAMS early this year. Many other RMOs will spend time at SWAMS, and the team also looks forward to welcoming two GP Registrars shortly.

SWAMS also said goodbye to GP Registrar Dr Andrew Yan recently. We wish Dr Andrew all the best in his future endeavours.

Update: 3 March 2026

Please welcome our two new GP Registrars, Dr Sam Thio and Dr Umesha Kalubowila. GP Registrars are fully qualified doctors who are completing supervised training in general practice so they can become fully qualified GPs.

Dr Umesha started her medical career in Sri Lanka before moving to Oman and then Australia. She has worked in various departments at hospitals in Launceston (Tasmania), Kalgoorlie and Perth, and has completed a Diploma in Child Health through Western Sydney University.

She especially enjoys working in child health and emergency medicine, as well as women’s health, lifestyle medicine and chronic disease management.

Dr Sam studied medicine in Indonesia before moving to Western Australia to work as a Medical Officer in the South West, Great Southern and Bindjareb regions six years ago.

She loves listening carefully to her patients and working closely with them to problem-solve and support their long-term wellbeing.

Preventative health, chronic disease management and women’s health are some of her main interests. She also assists surgeons in her spare time, helping her stay connected with her hands-on clinical practice.

Outside work you could find her gardening, doing art and craft, or building with Lego.

“I feel a mix of nerves and excitement as I start at SWAMS,” Dr Sam said. “Nervous because it’s a new environment, but genuinely excited to begin contributing to the team and the community.”
