Basketball fever hit the south west during the April school holidays as the Binar Futures Djeran Basketball Carnival returned bigger than ever.
The three-day event brought together 97 teams from across the region — a massive jump from 65 in 2024.
It was a celebration of sport, culture, and community at Australind’s Leschenault Leisure Centre.
The courts came alive with the sound of bouncing balls, sneakers on timber, and the cheers of families backing their koorlangkas as they played with heart, hustle and community pride.
But the event wasn’t just about basketball — it was about building healthier, stronger communities.
Alongside the fast-paced on-court action, the Binar Health Embassy created a powerful space for connection and care on the squash courts.
Run in partnership with SWAMS and others, the Health Embassy brought together a range of health services, free checks, and wellbeing resources for families.
The SWAMS presence was strong, with our team welcoming visitors across two days of the carnival.
Community members were able to:
• Chat to our diabetes educator
• Get an eye check with our optometry team.
• Visit the physio for help with warm-ups, cool-downs and strapping.
• Yarn with the Social & Emotional Wellbeing crew.
• Learn from the Tackling Indigenous Smoking team.
A highlight for many was the SWAMS sausage sizzle, with the Tackling Indigenous Smoking crew keeping the BBQ hot and the conversations flowing.
Young ones were encouraged to stamp their health passports by visiting different services, earning fun prizes along the way — a clever and interactive way to promote good health habits from an early age.
The carnival follows on from Binar’s successful Albany event held in conjunction with SWAMS earlier in the year.
