Caring for koorlangkas: foster care support from SWAMS

Looking after koorlangkas (children) is something our communities have always done — and it continues to be one of the most important things we can do to build a strong future.

At Kwaba Bidi, we support Aboriginal children who, for many different reasons, cannot live with their moort (family). Our foster care or out of home care program is about keeping these children safe, supported, and connected to culture — with carers who understand the importance of that connection.

We walk alongside our foster carers every step of the way, taking the time to listen and find what works for their household. Carers are supported with regular check-ins, ongoing cultural guidance, and 24/7 on-call support.

Most of our team are Aboriginal, and we make sure every child’s cultural identity is respected, nurtured, and celebrated through learning, experience, and connection.

Kwaba Bidi is part of SWAMS, one of the largest Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations in regional WA. We welcome carers from all backgrounds — and especially encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to yarn with us if they’re thinking about taking that step.
