FREE Seasonal Flu Vaccinations

April 9, 2020

Seasonal Flu Vaccinations are now available.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are being urged to protect themselves and their families against the 2020 cold and flu season especially with the new COVID-19 outbreak.
While these 2020 seasonal flu vaccinations will not protect you against the new COVID-19 virus, it is very important to ensure you have immunity against more common viruses to avoid multi-level sickness.

“The flu can be a very serious illness and unfortunately, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are at a higher risk of developing complications due to the common cold and flu. This paired with the additional complications of the COVID-19 outbreak could be catastrophic for our community. For this reason, we urge you to get yourself and your families vaccinated.” Says South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) CEO, Lesley Nelson.

Influenza symptoms are typically more severe than your common cold and is caused by a virus that can infect your nose, throat and sometimes lungs. The virus spreads easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing and close contact.

Influenza symptoms such as fever, headache, tiredness and muscle aches can start suddenly. Symptoms can last for a week or more.
Every year the influenza vaccine changes to match the influenza virus that is most likely to be around during that season. There is emerging evidence that the influenza vaccine gives the most protection within the first three to four months after it is given. SWAMS offers FREE influenza vaccinations for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Walk-ins will not be accepted for these clinics due to the current social and physical distancing laws / guidelines. Please call SWAMS on 9726 6000 to make your appointment.
