July 7, 2020
The National NAIDOC committee decided that in the interest of protecting vulnerable communities and people from the COVID-19 virus, the 2020 NAIDOC Week dates must be postponed. SWAMS supports the decision of the National Committee and has also made the difficult decision to cancel our annual NAIDOC Family Fun Day and Elders Luncheon.
We could not however let the original dates go by without acknowledgment and have therefore developed some celebratory videos and decorations to commemorate the original dates 5 – 12 July 2020.
NAIDOC week give us an opportunity to celebrate and share our rich Indigenous cultures across the country and communities. The focus of NAIDOC Week changes each year with the 2020 theme announced as “Always was, always will be” this theme recognises that our First Nations People were the first inhabitants of Australia and have a connection to this land that stretches over 65,000 years.
Due to the unpredictable nature of this year, we have been unable to reschedule our face to face celebrations but will advise the community of any changes to this plan as soon as we can.
In the meantime we would like to encourage our community to celebrate and share our culture in small groups in whatever capacity possible for yourself and your moort.
