Contagious Syphilis Outbreak

May 3, 2021

There has been an outbreak of contagious syphilis across the country.

This outbreak started in the Kimberley region in 2014, spread to the Pilbara in 2018, the Goldfields in 2019 and in 2020 Perth metropolitan and areas of the South West have also documented outbreaks.

Syphilis can be very dangerous if it is not found and treated, especially for our boodjari yorgas and babies. Often there are no symptoms but if left untreated can cause serious long-term health issues. It is important to get tested. All pregnant women will be tested a few times throughout their pregnancy.

SWAMS now offers an easy pain-free test option for ALL people aged 16 – 45. Syphilis can be cured with the right antibiotics from your health care provider. However, treatment might not undo any damage that the infection has already done. The test only takes 15 minutes for results and is completely pain free.
